Plenty of adults come to see me in their thirties, forties and fifties, and many start the conversation almost apologetically: “I know I’m a bit old for this, but…” You’re not. Here’s what actually matters when an adult wants straighter teeth.

Is there an age limit for braces or Invisalign?

No. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the teeth and the bone around them are healthy. Age on its own is rarely the deciding factor. Gum health is.

Why does gum health matter so much for adults?

Teeth move through bone, and in adults the gums and bone have had decades of wear. If there’s gum disease, moving teeth before treating it can make things worse. So before any adult starts, we check the gums and bone carefully.

This is where working alongside a periodontist helps. My husband, Dr. Prashant Nanda, is a periodontist, and for adults with gum concerns we plan the treatment together. Often the gums are treated first and the straightening follows a few weeks later.

Should an adult choose braces or Invisalign?

Many adults prefer aligners, mainly because nobody at work notices them and they come out for meals and meetings. For crowding, spacing and many bite problems they work very well. Some cases, especially severe bites or teeth that need a lot of rotation, still do better with braces, and ceramic braces are a good middle ground if you want them less visible. I’ll tell you which one I’d pick for your teeth and why.

Does treatment take longer for adults?

Sometimes a little. Adult bone is denser, so teeth can move slightly more slowly than in a teenager. The bigger difference is usually the kind of problem being fixed, not the patient’s age. Many adult cases are actually simpler, like crowding that has crept in over the years.

How much does adult orthodontic treatment cost?
