Why is it Important to replace a Missing Tooth?

May 12, 2021

Everyday we see patients that have missing teeth. Some of these are recently extracted teeth and at other times patients have been missing them for several years. The reasons for removal of these teeth may vary, however the reasons to replace them are usually the same.

  1. Aesthetics – Missing a tooth or teeth in the front of your mouth can lead to an embarrassing gap in your smile.
  1. Difficulty in Chewing – Having a missing tooth or teeth in the back of the mouth, which may not be visible from outside, over a period of time makes chewing difficult and puts excessive forces on the muscles of mastication, leading to headaches.
  1. Damage to the adjacent teeth – The empty space created by the loss of a tooth or teeth causes the adjacent and opposing teeth to migrate partially into this space. Thus, leading to a malalignment of teeth, this further leads to creation of gaps between healthy teeth, causing food accumulation and cavities.
  1. Bone Loss – Over a period of time the bone in the area of the missing tooth or teeth starts to reduce which can in years to come lead to a change in the facial appearance.

There are several ways to replace a missing tooth or teeth. The most common being, either with a Dental Implant or Crown and Bridge prosthesis.
