Most people who ask me this have either had braces as a child and remember the sore days after every tightening, or have heard a friend complain. So here’s the honest version of what Invisalign feels like.
Does Invisalign hurt?
It feels more like pressure than pain. When you start a new set of aligners, your teeth feel tight and a little tender for a day or two, sometimes three. That pressure is actually a good sign: it means the aligners are doing their job. After that, they feel comfortable until the next set.
What does the very first day feel like?
Your teeth will feel snug, and biting on something firm may feel tender. If small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments were placed, your tongue will notice them. Some people speak with a slight lisp for the first day or two while the tongue gets used to the aligners. It passes quickly.
How can I make the first few days easier?
Switch to each new set at bedtime, so you sleep through the tightest hours. Stick to softer food for a day. Keep the aligners in as much as possible, because taking them out often actually makes the pressure feel worse each time they go back in. If you find you need a painkiller, use one you already take safely and follow the label, or ask us.
Is Invisalign more comfortable than braces?
For most people, yes. There are no brackets or wires to rub the inside of the cheeks, so mouth ulcers are much less common, and there are no wire-tightening appointments. The pressure with each new aligner is gentler because each set moves the teeth only a little.
When should I call the clinic?
If an aligner has a sharp edge that’s cutting your gum or tongue, if a set doesn’t fit properly, if an attachment comes off, or if soreness lasts more than a few days rather than easing. These are usually quick fixes, so don’t wait until your next appointment.
