A common worry for parents: their child needs their teeth straightened, but they’re not keen on two years of metal braces through school photos, board exams and sports. Invisalign is often an option for teenagers now. Here are the questions parents most often ask, with honest answers.
What age can a child start Invisalign?
Usually once most of the permanent teeth have come in, which is typically somewhere between 11 and 14. Before that, if there’s a jaw growth problem, we may use a different appliance first. I’d recommend a first orthodontic check by around age 7, as the American Association of Orthodontists advises, so problems can be caught while the jaw is still growing.
Will a teenager actually wear them 22 hours a day?
This is the real question, and the answer depends on the child. Aligners only work when they’re in the mouth. Invisalign’s aligners for teens can include blue wear indicators that fade with use, so you and I can see whether they’re being worn enough. If a child is unlikely to manage it, fixed braces may be the more reliable choice, and I’ll say so.
Are aligners better than braces for teenagers?
Neither is better for everyone. Aligners are removable, so brushing and flossing are easier, eating is unrestricted, and there are no wires to break before an exam or a match. Braces work full time without relying on the child, and they’re often the better fit for certain complex bite problems. After examining your child’s bite and X-rays, I’ll explain which suits them and why.
What about sports, music and school?
Aligners can come out for a match or a wind instrument, and go back in afterwards. Most teens talk normally within a day or two. A sports mouthguard can still be worn for contact sports.
What does it cost, and how long does it take?
Teen cases are planned the same way as adult cases. Invisalign at our clinics usually costs between ₹1.5 and ₹3 lakh, and metal braces start from ₹80,000. Treatment typically takes 12 to 24 months, depending on the case. You’ll get the exact plan and cost after a 3D scan.
What should parents do next?
Book an orthodontic check, even if you’re not sure your child needs treatment yet. Catching a problem early often makes treatment simpler.
